Preparing for an Ocean Crossing

An ocean crossing is on almost every sailor’s bucket list. However, a voyage that lasts 20 to 30 days—sailing day and night through occasionally challenging weather—requires thorough preparation.

Many sailors turn to the community for advice. For example, I recently followed a young couple on YouTube preparing for their crossing. They wisely created a "Top 6" priority list to guide their preparations. The number one item on their list was power. This was followed by provisioning, crew, and peace of mind.

While they focused on maintaining their diesel generator and adding solar panels, many experienced ocean sailors take it a step further. To ensure a reliable, constant energy supply, the gold standard is a combination of solar panels and a hydro generator. This setup allows you to generate power silently and sustainably throughout the entire trip—day and night.

To help you plan your own energy needs, we have linked a presentation by Mr. Liukkonen of S/Y Melina. Drawing on his extensive ocean sailing experience, he breaks down his boat’s power consumption and explains how to select the ideal combination of power sources.
